Troubleshoot tools

Find why a tool failed, was skipped or slowed the call. Fix the part holding it up.

#The assistant never uses the tool

  • Check that the tool is switched on for this assistant on its Tools tab, and that you saved.
  • Rewrite the description to say when to use the tool as well as what it does.
  • Say it in the instructions too: "Always check the order status before answering delivery questions."

#It uses the tool with wrong arguments

  • Describe each parameter with an example of a valid value.
  • Use an enum when only certain values are valid.
  • Mark only the truly necessary parameters as required, so the model doesn't invent the rest.

#The tool fails

  • Open the call and look at the tool call: the arguments, the HTTP status, the logs and the error.
  • Run the same arguments in the tool's test panel.
  • Requests only go to public addresses. A tool can't reach localhost or a private network.

#The caller waits too long

  • Set a start message so there is no silence.
  • Use pick or return a smaller object so the model reads less.
  • Lower the timeout and handle the failure message gracefully.
